The People’s Advocate, Mihail Cotorobai has participated on December 06 to the UN Prize in the field of Human Rights award ceremony, 2018 edition.
In his opening speech, the Ombudsman said that he is honored to participate to UN Prize in the Field of Human Rights starting from the double significance of the International Day of Human Rights of this year. On December 10, we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – a document of crucial importance for the humanity as well as 20 years from the adoption of UN Declaration on human rights defenders.
Mihail Cotorobai reminded the fact that in this year the National Human Rights Institution has also celebrated 20 years of activity. Moreover, in 2018, the People’s Advocate Office was accredited with „A” status, under the Paris Principles, fact which constitutes the evidence of appreciating the institution compliance with the international requirements and standards in this field, but it also oblige the members of the team further to be more active and efficient.
The 2018 year was full of international events related to the human rights field and the actors involved in the activity of human rights promotion and protection; it was the jubilee for several profile organizations of ombudsmen, declared Mihail Cotorobai.
The People’s Advocate has also stated that on the national plan the 2018 year distinguished by regresses in the field of human rights. The experts of this field, the external partners of our country more frequently speak about the selective justice of the Republic of Moldova, the slide-slips related to freedom of expression, deterioration of rule of law, democratic standards. The 2018 year was a year with hate speeches in the public space and intimidations in the address of journalists.
In such conditions, the human rights defenders find more difficult to exercise their duties, but their role in the society also increases. From this perspective, the UN awards of 2018 year will have a special value, declared Mihail Cotorobai.
The People’s Advocate congratulated the UN Prize in the field of human rights winners, 2018 edition with the occasion of their designation to this category and thanked them for their contribution to establishment of a democratic rule of law where the observance of human rights will be an absolute priority for the authorities.
